This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.

Part A: Curriculum music

This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.

Lesson Time (per week):

EYFS - Daily songs & rhymes 5 -10 mins. Regular opportunities for music within Continuous Provision.  25 min structured weekly music sessions (alternate terms).

KS1 – 30 mins

KS2 – 40 mins

Music Singing Assemblies (weekly):

20 mins.

Y1-6 use Sing Up Music’s Curriculum. All teachers have their own log ins with access to plans and lesson resources.

The school has adopted a 2 year cycle for foundation subjects, including music, and units have been selected to ensure a variety of musical skills are explored and  developed.

All children from Y1-6 learn to play the ukulele in class music lessons.  As children progress through the school, they learn more chords and techniques, playing songs with increasing levels of challenge.

In Y1-6, children learn to play the glockenspiel.

Weekly singing assemblies include a variety of songs, covering a range of genres and musical styles, including but not limited to: singing games, rounds, partner songs, action songs, call and response songs and contemporary songs.  Children sing in different parts and sing harmonies.  Children regularly sing songs in different languages.

Part B: Co-curricular music

This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.

Peripatetic tuition at Beech Green includes ukulele, guitar, violin and piano lessons.  These are taught by visiting music teachers.

Rocksteady visit weekly, talking groups of children to learn and perform contemporary songs, as vocalists, keyboard players, electric guitarists and vocalists.

Part C: Musical performances

This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.

Rocksteady perform concerts to parents/carers and the whole school, three times a year.

EYFS perform songs to families as part of a Christmas Workshop.

KS1 perform a Christmas nativity play in December.

Year 2 perform a ukulele concert to parents/carers as part of their personal development passport.

Year 3 and 4 perform a Christmas carol concert in December.

Year 5 perform songs for the residents of the nursing home next door, as part of their personal development passport.

Year 5 and 6 visit our local Tesco and perform Christmas carols in class groups in December.

Year 5 and 6 also learn song for Young Voices, and have the opportunity to perform at the Young Voices concert in Birmingham.

In the future

This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.

  • We hope to have visiting musicians performing for the pupils during the year, both professional and from local secondary schools, exposing pupils to a range of musical styles, and inspiring pupils to play and sing themselves.
  • To increase the number of pupils learning an instrument through peripatetic lessons in school.
